How to Prepare Your Home for Freezing Tempuratures?
Did you know Texas ranks as the fourth worst state in the country for pipe bursting? It can cause a miserable mess and cost thousands of dollars. Frozen and burst pipes pose a significant risk during winter, so take steps to prevent this.
Ensure proper winterization to keep indoor and outdoor pipes warm. The home's heat and warmth from the ground helps prevent plumbing from freezing. Here are some steps you can take to support this process and keep your pipes protected.
How to Know If You Have a Frozen Pipe?
If you try to use a faucet and suddenly there is no water coming out on either the hot or cold side, there is a high likelihood you have a frozen pipe. Unless the freeze is on an exposed portion of the pipe, there is no way for you to tell where the pipe is frozen in the wall. It is just a matter of waiting.
A frozen spot may or may not have damaged the pipe. You usually won’t know this until it thaws out and the damaged spot becomes an active leak.
What to Do When Your Pipes Freeze and/or Burst?
- Thawing the Pipes
- • If possible, keep the water flowing. If the pipe is partially frozen but water will still come out of the faucet, keep that water trickling through it to help it warm up.
- If you have access to the frozen portion of the pipe, you can use a hair dryer, space heater, or some other source of gentle heat to thaw the pipes out. If you can put a space heater under the cabinet, that may be enough to thaw out pipes in the wall.
If you thaw out a frozen pipe, you may expose an active leak that will cause water damage to your home unless the water is turned off. DO NOT attempt to thaw out your pipes if you cannot immediately shut the water off to your home!
Be Prepared To Shut Off Water: Knowing how to shut off your home's water supply is essential to prevent flood damage from frozen pipes. Frozen pipes may begin leaking immediately, but more commonly, leaks occur as the pipes thaw.
Please note that we cannot work on frozen pipes; we will have to wait until they thaw out to repair them, but as soon as you notice a leak, call us immediately.
