On Trend Treats

If you have not seen the colorful videos (think “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”) and Instagram-worthy photos recently on social media of the outlandishly tasty treats at Frisco’s Hiccups & Churroholic restaurant, I would be shocked. This new, trendy dining destination has attracted a lot of attention for its eclectic menu of Asian-fusion cuisine and for its reputation as a one-of-a-kind destination for churro connoisseurs.

On a typical Monday that was in need of a little excitement, a couple of my friends joined me before our weekly viewing of “The Bachelorette” at Hiccups & Churroholic to see what all the hype was about! Upon entering the newly-opened restaurant, you are met with great ambiance and accent lighting in a room filled with farmhouse-style tables and chairs. The layout is simple but inviting. The walls are lined with white subway-like tiles, and at the far end of the room, guests can check out digital menus mounted on the wall to decide what to order (trust me, this may take a minute because of all the items to choose from).

Churroholic was created by the parent company, Hiccups; and, the churros this team make are not your average buy-from-a-generic-stand-at-Six-Flags kind of desserts. I am talking about fresh batches made daily that provide crisp, warm, sweet bites of this Spanish-inspired treat. Churroholic features churro artisans who undergo a series of training methods to make sure diners only receive the highest quality desserts. And, they do not disappoint!

Hiccups & Churroholic serves a variety of specialty drinks and boba (bubble tea with tapioca balls, a gluten-free starch extracted from the root of a cassava plant). Appetizers include items like Popcorn Chicken, fries and Cajun Wings. In addition to photo-ready desserts, the menu features flavored coffee drinks that pair perfectly with your food. Hiccups & Churroholic offers special teas, iced milk teas, coffee, smoothies, slushies, hot lattes and classic soft drinks.

For my drink, I wanted to try something unusual, so I ordered the Horchata Milk Tea. Brittany chose the Strawberry Twist Tea and Rachel tried the Guava Berry smoothie (which was like a meal in itself)! The Horchata Milk Tea was like nothing I had tasted before, but I loved it. It was topped with whipped cream, sprinkled with cinnamon and drizzled with caramel (over the top, I know)! The creamy blend with the boba added was simply delectable. Brittany provided a rave review of her drink, which included strawberry and mango green tea, strawberry bits and mango jelly. Rachel loved the real fruit and nectarous flavor of her smoothie.

After we ordered, we picked a table somewhat in the middle of the room. Flatware and napkins were already waiting at the table and natural light flowed through the large windows at the front of the room.

When you pay at Hiccups & Churroholic, you can go ahead and place your order for drinks, appetizers, main courses and desserts. If you do not want everything to come out to the table at once, no problem! You have the option to let the cashier know you are ready for your next dish whenever the time comes. The people who work at Hiccups & Churroholic are so kind and have no problem explaining the expansive menu options and offerings to newbies.

So, after sipping on our sacchariferous, cold drinks and catching up on all the latest news from our lives for a few minutes, we got our appetizer – the Sriracha Sizzlin’ Fries. The pop of color on the plate was beautiful. I would say the dish was somewhat like cheese fries … only with a Thai fusion element. The Fries are topped with filet mignon cubes, onions, bell pepper, mozzarella cheese and offer a kick of spice and heat from the sriracha.

For the main course, I had the Chicken Pad Thai and I cannot say enough great things about it. I love many of the Thai food restaurants here in Frisco, and Hiccups & Churroholic has most certainly been added to the top of that list. The food was spicy (which I love), but not overwhelmingly hot. Between the green onion and noodles stir-fried with egg, were blocks of tofu, tender chicken and bursts of flavor. I squeezed a lime over the contents of the entire plate before I ate it, helping the flavors come to the surface even more.

My friends Brittany and Rachel both had the garlic noodles … one with shaken chicken and one with beef. They agreed that you can never have too much garlic in any dish, so this was the perfect choice for them. Apparently, the noodles were spiced to “absolute perfection.” The meat was tossed with onions and beautiful, vibrant bell peppers. Another comment made about the dish was the quality and crispness of the vegetables. No one wants mushy vegetables in their food!

Before I knew it, it was time for what we all had secretly been trying to rush through the other foods for … dessert. We tried two different desserts between the three of us (again, with much leftover in the end). The first dessert we decided on was the Matcha Pebbles Churro with Cookie Monster ice cream. Colorful does not even begin to describe the look of this confectionary delight. The already sweet churro was dipped and covered in Fruity Pebbles cereal (a favorite of mine since childhood). The churro was looped over and stuck in the bowl with the bright blue ice cream. Believe me when I say, photos were taken by all before anyone was allowed to take even one bite. We also tried the Churro Sundae with Cookies and Cream ice cream. Served in a large paper tray, miniature churros act as a bed beneath the large scoop of ice cream, whipped cream and toppings. Our eyes were so much bigger than our stomachs on this one. As much as it killed us, some of the sundae had to be left behind because we were just so full.

One thing to note is that the portions of food are very generous. We each had leftovers to take with us to work the next day for lunch (I love when this happens)! Each warm dish came out quickly and staff members were quick to see if we needed anything.

Run, do not walk, to Hiccups & Churroholic, located at 9144 Prestmont Place, Suite 220. Your taste buds will most definitely thank you! Hiccups & Churroholic is a great place to sit down, relax and catch up with friends over a plate of scrumptious food, but you can always pick up food to take home and eat on the sofa in front of Netflix’s latest.
