Blending the Essentials

The new year gives us the opportunity to take a shot (sometimes in the dark) at making and keeping resolutions designed to make the coming year more successful. Whether resolutions are health-minded or personal, it is important to hit the ground running in order to achieve your goals. In the past, my resolutions have ranged from fad diets and workout plans to career aspirations and so much more. This year will be no different, as I try to focus on foods filled with healthy nutrients.

After the holiday chaos and poor eating decisions pass (guilty), it can be difficult to find a quick option for a healthy meal on-the-go. Once we all get back in the routine at the office and life’s glorious chaos is back in full-swing, taking the time and energy to make good choices when it comes to food can be put on the back burner. It is often so easy and quick to drive through somewhere nearby, but those calories quickly catch up to you!

Vitality Bowls Superfood Café in Frisco, located at 5105 Eldorado Parkway #160, is the location of this restaurant’s fourth Texas store. Not only is it a fast option (you can order in advance for pick-up), but every order includes foods that serve to nourish your body with the essentials it needs. With a variety of health-food-infused açai bowls, smoothies, paninis, breakfast items, dessert bowls, juices, salads and even coffee, there is a little something for everyone … health nuts and food enthusiasts alike. There is even a little something special for youngsters who are looking to their parents to help influence their eating decisions and daily habits (your influence starts early).

The Frisco location is conveniently located next to the Dallas North Tollway and surrounded by a variety of shopping destinations that are generally included on my errand run. When you walk in the store, you immediately see the menu on the wall above the cash register area. Upon first glance, it is almost overwhelming! The options are endless when it comes to the healthy combinations you can order. The staff is always very friendly and helpful when it comes to choosing the perfect bowl or sandwich. Multiple times, I have explained what flavors I love or described something I am craving, and they always help me make a great choice.

One of the most popular items at Vitality Bowls is the açai bowl, made from a thick blend of antioxidant-rich organic açai berry, topped with organic superfood ingredients. The menu provides a complete list of all the ingredients that can be blended in bowls (which can be ordered in 14, 20 or 28-ounce containers), and even offers a calorie count for each option. None of the bowls and smoothies offered at Vitality Bowls contain ice, frozen yogurt, added sugar, artificial preservatives, trans fats or any other fillers. Rest assured that most of the ingredients are organic and everything is made fresh to order. That works for me!

From the Warrior Bowl offering ingredients that provide strength to the Dragon Bowl with ingredients that help build stamina, there is something to help you supplement the missing nutrients in your diet. Any bowl can be “powered up” with other additives.

On my first visit (I have been several times now because it is just so delicious and guilt-free), I tried the Vitality Bowl. The base of this açai bowl is made with organic açai, bananas, strawberries and flax seed. Toppings include organic granola, honey, bananas, strawberries and goji berries. Each bite is filled with a chilled assortment of bold flavors and fruit. I love the sweetness the honey adds to each bite. I had no idea the bowls would be as filling as they are. I had one for lunch and it kept me full and energized all the way up to dinnertime. No need for snacking of any kind!

Smoothies are also a great option if you are grabbing food on-the-go or need something refreshing and flavorful. The Pitaya Punch smoothie is made from pitaya, fresh-juiced orange, coconut milk, chia seeds, strawberries, mango and spinach. The bright pinkish color of the smoothie is enticing and all-natural. To say it is refreshing is an understatement!

Morning meals, especially on the weekends, are often a source of weakness when you are trying to eat healthy. At Vitality Bowls, they offer a Superfood Waffle and breakfast bowls. The waffle includes whole wheat, quinoa, chia seeds, flax seeds, pitaya, whey protein and milk. You also have a choice of toppings. When I decided to try this delicious (yet healthier) version of a breakfast favorite, I was blown away by how delicious it was … with less calories and more fruit! This is a wonderful alternative to piling on the butter, whipped cream and additional toppings.

During a breakfast-time visit to Vitality Bowls, my friend tried the Eggnini Panini featuring organic, cage-free eggs, spinach, mozzarella and pesto. Can I just say it looked unbelievably good? Melted cheese oozed from every bite and the aroma of a home-cooked breakfast lingered in the air after the staff member brought it to our table. Paninis can be made with whole wheat, white or gluten-free bread.

Coming in at only 420 calories, the Kale Salad is made from (you guessed it) kale, cucumbers, goat cheese, quinoa, celery and house-made Dijon vinaigrette. There is an option to add roasted turkey breast or seasoned sirloin to any of the salads. I love that there is a little flair to this salad – more attention is paid to this colorful dish than when you wait in a line and choose the same old boring toppings from a salad bar.

In my opinion, if you are going to have a salad, why not finish off the meal with a healthy version of dessert? The Dessert Bowl, with a base made from organic açai, coconut milk, bananas, strawberries and dark chocolate, is topped with bananas, strawberries, coconut shavings and chocolate chips. My tummy is growling just thinking about it!

Other interesting items I hope to taste test soon include the Detoxifier drink from the Fresh Juice Bar portion of the menu. This drink includes lemon, raw ginger, cucumber and coconut water. It sounds so refreshing and delicious! Also, the Gladiator panini, which is peanut butter on whole wheat bread with granola, bananas and honey, sounds tempting.
