A Chic Staycation at Hôtel Swexan
By Allie Spletter
Spring has officially sprung, and while summer is not too far off, it’s the perfect time to step away from that everyday routine, rejuvenate, and savor the simple joy of a night or two away from home…but not too far away. Staycations are a quintessential option to do just that as they’re an accessible retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but one that you get to make your own. Whether you want to completely relax and disconnect or head out for a night out on the town, a staycation is the perfect opportunity to take time for yourself.
Recently, my husband Zach and I had the opportunity to head down to Dallas for a night in the city, which we love to do occasionally. We love the skyline and the excitement of being in the middle of the sights and sounds, and we especially love exploring new hotels. There’s just something about a one or two-night stay in a hotel that refreshes your brain. Even a quick overnight change in environment is a big thing when you spend all your time in one place, and a fabulous hotel recharges your brain as you can take in new smells, sounds, colors, patterns, and layouts.
Enter Dallas’ newest luxury boutique hotel: Hôtel Swexan. Nestled in the heart of Dallas’ vibrant Harwood District, this property stands majestically as a beacon of luxury and timeless elegance. We had the pleasure of indulging in a one-night stay in a Panoramic Corner King room at this exquisite establishment, and let me tell you, it was an experience like no other. Stepping into this boutique hotel is akin to stepping into a world where hospitality reigns supreme and every detail is meticulously curated to ensure an unforgettable experience for each guest.
In the summer of 2023, the doors of Hôtel Swexan opened, marking the dawn of a new era in Dallas hospitality. Developed by the esteemed family-owned and Dallas-based global real estate firm Harwood International, a real estate powerhouse with deep roots in the city, this architectural marvel serves as the crown jewel of the sprawling 19-city block Harwood District. But beyond its grandeur lies a story woven with threads of Swiss finesse and Texan charm.
The name “Hôtel Swexan” is a nod to its rich lineage where “Swiss hospitality meets Texan charm.” Inspired by the multi-generational Swiss-Texan heritage of Harwood International’s founders, this enchanting property is a testament to the enduring spirit of family and tradition.
Operated by the seasoned veterans of Harwood Hospitality Group, boasting over a century of collective expertise, Hôtel Swexan is more than just a hotel; it’s a vision realized. Every corner of its exquisitely crafted and designed spaces reflects the founders’ travel adventures and profound love for art and design. Step inside, and you’re transported on a European-inspired journey where every nook and cranny tells a story of elegance and refinement. As the flagship hotel of Harwood Hospitality Group, it offers a fusion of Texan hospitality and European flair like no other.
As we entered the elegant lobby of Hôtel Swexan, I was immediately struck by its classically sophisticated yet modern ambiance. The inviting interior exuded a sophisticated and chic charm reminiscent of a bygone era, carefully designed with opulent materials like velvet, stone, and leather adorning every corner.
Upon check-in, we were warmly greeted by the staff, who quickly got us checked in and epitomized the hotel’s commitment to exemplary service. As we headed to our room, we were lucky enough to run into the hotel’s General Manager, Mr. Julian Payne, who warmly and proudly welcomed us to the property. An acclaimed industry veteran, Mr. Payne has managed boutique and top five-star hotels around the world and has played a vital part in Hôtel Swexan’s young success.
After chatting with Mr. Payne, we were excited to head to our room on the eighteenth floor. From the moment we stepped foot into the Panoramic Corner King room, we were captivated by the breathtaking views. With two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows, we had sweeping panoramas of the Dallas skyline. We were even treated to an incredible sunset that evening, which we were able to take in thanks to the expansive views. (Seeing the skyline from our windows later that evening when we returned to our room was just as spectacular at night!)
The spacious room itself was a sanctuary of comfort and luxury. The ten-foot ceilings and abundant natural light created an airy and spacious atmosphere, while the 400-thread-count Frette sheets ensured a wonderfully restful night’s sleep. My absolute favorite part, however, was the indulgent 5-fixture bath, complete with a soaking tub whose water ran from the ceiling (yes, you read that right…you turn on the faucet, and the water comes down from the ceiling into the tub…my jaw dropped), an expansive walk-in shower, and a towel warming rack, all of which served as a perfect oasis to completely unwind.
With plush bathrobes and slippers, a coffee/tea maker, and a stocked mini-bar and snacks, it would have been really easy to order room service, put on a movie, and hang in the room for the night, but we knew there was more to explore, and the luxury didn’t end there.
Hôtel Swexan boasts an array of amenities designed to pamper and delight its guests. Guests of the hotel can enjoy a very well-appointed fitness center that features Technogym equipment and cardio machines, wet and dry saunas, a cold plunge pool, and complimentary yoga and fitness classes on the outdoor patio or in the fitness studio inside.
Perched high above on the property’s top floor is the rooftop outdoor pool, which features 180-degree sweeping views of the Dallas skyline. The rooftop pool and bar are reminiscent of a Moroccan oasis, and the rooftop features private cabanas and lounge furniture at the pool. The rooftop also features two restaurants: Pomelo, the pool bar, and Leonie, a breathtakingly picturesque three-meal garden restaurant. The décor and ambiance in Leonie truly has to be experienced as guests are transported to a chic, exquisitely enchanting eatery beneath an emerald canopy.
Back downstairs just off of the lobby lies yet another carefully curated gem, Isabelle’s, a restaurant and lounge inspired by the sidewalk cafes of Europe where guests can enjoy continental breakfast options or a light lunch. In the evening, Isabelle’s showcases classic martinis from around the world.
One of the highlights of our stay was dining at Stillwell’s, the hotel’s signature steakhouse that combines traditional options with adventurous new flavors. Tucked on the seventh floor of the hotel, Stillwell’s is open to the public, and when you step off the elevator and see the huge neon sign they’ve dubbed “Cowboy Vick” on your right, you know you’re in the right spot. Stillwell’s exudes a classy, old-world, and intimate vibe boasting rich hues, subtle mixes of design elements, velvet-draped booths, leather club chairs, and nods to Texas heritage. Having been created to honor the rich heritage of Texas rangers, Stillwell’s sets the stage for a culinary journey that doesn’t disappoint.
During our own culinary journey, we were captivated by the crabcake (one of the biggest portions we’ve had at a steakhouse) and yellowfin tuna, and Zach chose a 12-ounce Akaushi beef filet mignon (sourced from HWD Premium Beef, the hotel’s own cattle operation,) for dinner. At the same time, I savored the Chilean Sea Bass, and we shared baked mac & cheese, potato puree, and charred asparagus with our entrees. Each dish was truly delectable and prepared and seasoned perfectly. Though we had zero room for dessert or to further indulge, we had way more than we should have of the incredibly decadent classic sundae that featured toasted peanuts, whipped cream, warm chocolate, and a wafer.
As if Hôtel Swexan couldn’t get any more fabulous…after dinner, we didn’t go back up to the room; instead, we went down to the hotel’s lowest level, which is home to Babou’s, the hotel’s hideaway nightclub bar. Open to hotel guests and the public, Babou’s is a swanky late-night lounge featuring a bold and sultry design, upbeat music, and some of Dallas’ best dressed. Take a look around every corner as there is so much to appreciate in the design and décor choice in Babou’s while just on the other side of one of its walls lies The Library at Babou’s.
The Library is a sophisticated blend of chic yet cozy seating and craft cocktails amidst majestic walls full of books. We enjoyed a nightcap amidst shelves lined with antique books and the sounds of live jazz with the subtle beat of the energetic electronic music next door in Babou’s main room. It was the perfect end to a perfect day—a testament to the impeccable hospitality and attention to detail that defines Hôtel Swexan, no matter which part of the hotel you enjoy.
Our stay at Hôtel Swexan is more than just a getaway—it’s an experience. We were enveloped in a world of luxury and refinement that transcended time from the moment we arrived. I absolutely cannot wait to return! If you’re looking for the ultimate staycation experience in Dallas, look no further than Hôtel Swexan. Whether you’re indulging in a sumptuous meal at Stillwell’s, relaxing by the rooftop pool, or simply taking in the breathtaking views from your room, every moment spent at Hôtel Swexan is a moment to be cherished. With its unparalleled blend of Texan charm and European flair, it’s a destination that promises to exceed your every expectation.
